Untangle the names

Secret Santa, white elephant or Yankee swap?

The names vary by family. Agree on what actually happens before anyone shops.

Secret Santa: buy for a particular person

Each participant draws another person’s name and buys a gift for them. The giver is usually kept secret until opening, though groups can choose to reveal names later or never. This format works well when people know each other, have wishlists or are mailing gifts. Everyone should have one recipient and one giver.

White elephant: bring a gift to the pool

People bring wrapped gifts without choosing a recipient. Players take turns opening a new gift or taking an already opened one under the agreed rules. Some groups mean silly or impractical gifts by “white elephant”; others expect something useful. Ask which version your host means before bringing the novelty mug.

Yankee swap: often the same game, with different expectations

Many groups use Yankee swap for a take-and-swap gift game much like white elephant. In some families the name suggests useful gifts rather than joke presents. There is no single rulebook that every group follows, so the label alone is not enough. Write out the opening and stealing rules.

For a swap, set a stopping rule

One workable house rule: draw numbers, let each player open or take a gift, and freeze an item after it has been taken twice. A person whose gift is taken chooses again, but cannot immediately take the same gift back. Decide in advance whether the first player gets a final turn. Other rules work too; consistency matters more than the version.

Choose around the group, not the name

Use a name draw for personal gifts and people joining from afar. Use a swap when everyone will be present and enjoys the game. If someone dislikes competitive stealing, a simple wrapped-gift draw can keep the suspense without the bargaining. Set the budget and tone either way.
